Scaling & Root Planing

Scaling and root planing (SRP) is a non-surgical deep-cleaning procedure designed to treat gum disease by removing bacteria and hardened calculus from below the gum line. Often referred to as "deep cleaning," it targets the roots of the teeth to create a clean, smooth surface that allows the gums to heal and reattach properly to the tooth.

Stopping Gum Disease

When plaque and tartar build up beneath the gums, they cause infection and inflammation (periodontitis). This leads to periodontal pockets, where the gum detaches from the tooth. SRP cleans these pockets, removing the bacteria that prevent the gums from becoming healthy again.

  • Eliminates deep bacterial infection.
  • Reduces gum pocket depth to prevent further bone loss.
  • Stops gum bleeding and persistent bad breath.
  • Provides the foundational care needed to save loose teeth.

The SRP Process

Scaling removes the tartar from the visible tooth surface and the deep pocket. Root planing then smooths the tooth root, removing bacterial toxins and surface irregularities so that the gum tissue can re-adhere to the tooth surface securely.

  • Local anesthesia is used to ensure maximum comfort.
  • Ultrasonic and manual tools used for deep cleaning.
  • Targeted therapy for specific areas of pocketing.
  • Followed by a re-evaluation to monitor healing.

Healing and Maintenance

After the procedure, your gums may be sensitive for a few days as they heal and tighten back around your teeth. It is vital to follow an adjusted home care routine, which may include special mouth rinses or interdental tools, to support the healing process.

SRP is not a one-time fix; it is the first step in managing chronic periodontal disease. We will schedule follow-up maintenance appointments to monitor your progress and ensure your gums remain healthy long-term.

Protect Your Gums, Save Your Teeth

Periodontitis is a progressive condition. If left untreated, it leads to tooth loss. Early intervention through Scaling & Root Planing can reverse the damage. Consult us today to assess your gum health.
